STAPEDECTOMY IN TYMPANOSCLEROSIS

Stapedectomy operations have been applied in 27 (19 female, 8 male) tympanosclerosis cases whose stapeses could not be mobilized since they were embedded in tympanosclerotic mass, between January 1995 and December 1997. Their average age was 28 (range 12-62) years. The follow-up period was 3 months in 20 cases, 6 months in 14 cases and 12 months in 7 cases.

According to 500-2000 Hz pure tone hearing average of the cases, while average air bone gap (ABO) was 40 dB preoperatively, 23 dB in 3rd month, 17 dB in 6th month and 14 dB in l2th month postoperatively. Hearing gain (HG) over 10 dB was achieved 80% of the cases in 3rd month, 86% in 6th month and 100% in 12th month postoperatively. No dead ears was detected.

Stapedectomy in tympanosc1erosis is recommended in selected cases whose stapeses could not be mobilized and whose tympanic membrane are intact or grafted at previous operations within 6th month.
