INTRA- AND EXTRACRANIAL COMPLICATIONS OF AURICULAR CHOLESTEATOMA. A 5 YEARS RETROSPECTIVE STUDY (1991-1995)

Seventy-two patients underwent surgery for auricular cholesteatoma in the ENT Clinic of Timisoara during the nominated period. Of those, 9 patients (12.5%) were young people, of age 5-14 years.
Eighteen patients (25%) suffered intra- or extra-cranial complications. The most frequent encountered complications were, in order: peripheral facial paralysis in 8 cases, labyrinthic fistula in 3 cases, lateral sinus thrombophlebitis in 3 cases (1 patient developed septicemia), subperiosteal abscess in 1 case, cerebellar abscess in 1 case and meningitis in 1 case.
Considering the surgical procedures performed, more than half of the studied group (41 patients - 57%) underwent radical mastoidectomy and the rest (31 patients - 43%) underwent radical modified mastoidectomy.
