Evaluation and management of patients with vertigo and chronic dizziness requires ability to examine and to identify different types of abnormal eye movements. Clinically, spontaneous and stimulated eye movements can be observed with naked eyes, use of Frenzel’s glasses, or use of ENG and Video recording. This presentation will discuss the basic anatomy and physiology of the main functional classes of eye movements and their typical abnormalities. ENG tracings and Videotapes of different saccadic, pursuit, gaze, and vestibular eye movements will be shown. Differential diagnosis of inner ear and CNS causes of abnormal eye movements will be outlined and discussed. In particular, dysconjugate saccades, cerebellar eye movements, positional, and BPPN of different labyrinthine canals will be displayed and discussed. The incidence of different abnormal eye movements in a 5000 patient’s database will be presented. Additional time during the meeting can be arranged for participants to view and discuss these cases with the instructor.
